Welcome to the "official" setting of The Dark Mod. While FM authors can create stories in any world they like with our tools, they have been tailored to suit the world described below.

Overview: The Dark Mod is set in a world that is dark, gritty, adult, and most of all, believable. People talk and act in ways that are appropriate to their background and motivations. Uneducated guards don't speak like poets or discuss philosophy. Whores do not have hearts of gold. The lower classes live in squalid conditions. Brutality is commonplace. Public torture and hangings are one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Those rare few that escape the grime and the poverty either exploit those below them or are born into their station. The rich care nothing for the poor as long as they don't revolt.

The world is bigger than any one person's story, and there are no black and white answers to what the world is really like. Everyone has their own point of view, shaped by their background and their allegiences. Just because a faction believes they know "the truth" doesn't make them right.

The Dark Mod world is not so different from our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture and technology ranging from medieval to victorian. It is a steampunk setting, with industrial technology existing alongside medieval castles and gothic cathedrals.

The main city of the The Dark Mod setting does not exist in isolation. It is part of a larger world, with political connections, trading agreements, and hostile neighbours that could be possible plots for FM missions.
